Philippines' largest fintech now has direct advisory role in national cybercrime response strategy.
Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group Acting Director Brig. Gen. Wilson Asueta announced the appointment of GCash Chief Information Security Officer Miguel Geronilla to the PNP-ACG Advisory Group during the unit's 13th founding anniversary celebration at Camp Crame on March 12.
Geronilla said cybersecurity is a shared responsibility and that joining the advisory group allows GCash to contribute lessons learned from protecting millions of users and support programs that strengthen threat response. PNP-ACG conducted thousands of operations, investigations, and cyber patrols in 2025, blocking thousands of illegal sites, online pages, and accounts linked to scams.
Asueta said working closely with the private sector helps law enforcement respond faster and more effectively against the continuous development of cybercrime. He added that the addition of leaders like Geronilla strengthens PNP-ACG's ability to protect the public against threats.
National Police Commission Vice Chairperson and Executive Officer Commissioner Rafael Vicente Calinisan emphasized that the cybercrime unit needs private sector help to effectively serve everyone. He noted that addressing cyber threats requires time, effort, and expertise from both law enforcement and industry partners.
The partnership between GCash and PNP-ACG formalized through a 2022 memorandum of agreement has already produced joint initiatives including a Fintech Security Handbook and a recently launched Scam Assistance Hub that enables quick filing of reports through QR codes. Also present at the anniversary event were PNP-ACG Deputy Director of Operations PCOL Romeo Desiderio, Deputy Director of Administration PCOL Richmond Tadina, and Chief of Staff PCOL Reynaldo Dela Cruz.
🇵🇭 What This Means for Filipinos: GCash protects over 90 million Filipino users and handles billions in daily transactions — having its security chief advise PNP-ACG means faster coordination when scammers target digital wallets or fake payment requests hit Filipino inboxes. The Scam Assistance Hub with QR code reporting gives victims a direct line to both GCash and law enforcement, potentially cutting response time from days to hours when fraudulent transfers occur.
